FAQs
What probe types are available for the Vertex VMS?
Standard probes include sphere, taper, disc, pin and parallel probes, plus a dedicated scriber for layout work. Each probe is designed to optimise access and contact for specific feature types such as bores, grooves, small holes and sheet metal edges.
What is a disc probe used for?
Disc probes (6, 10 and 20 mm diameters) are used for internal and external diameters and distances where access is restricted, and are particularly useful for features such as circlip grooves. Their geometry allows reliable contact on recessed or narrow groove faces that are difficult to reach with a spherical probe.
What is the parallel probe used for?
The parallel probe is used primarily on sheet metal parts for internal and external diameters, heights, drops and distances between features. Its geometry helps maintain stable contact along edges and surfaces that would otherwise be difficult to reference consistently.
What if I can’t see the probe I need on the website?
The online list shows only a small selection of available probes and accessories; if you have specific feature, access or material requirements that are not covered, Eley’s team can advise on alternative or custom solutions. You can contact our specialists by phone on 01332 367475, email sales@eleymet.com, or via the online enquiry form.
When should I use a sphere probe?
Sphere probes, available in ruby or steel in 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10 mm diameters, are the general‑purpose choice for internal and external diameters, heights, drops, distances between features and centre‑to‑centre measurements. They are ideal for most turned and machined features where good surface contact and repeatability are required.
When should I choose a taper probe?
Taper probes (0–12 mm and 12–20 mm ranges) are designed for measuring pitch between holes. Their shape helps locate hole centres consistently when checking spacing on patterns and multi‑hole components.
Which probe is best for very small holes?
Pin probes, available in 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm diameters, are intended for measuring small features such as holes in sheet metal. They provide the clearance and rigidity needed for thin‑wall and small‑aperture applications where larger probes cannot enter reliably.
Can I use the Vertex VMS as a scriber for marking out?
Yes. The dedicated scriber accessory is designed for layout work on castings, sheet metal and similar components. This allows the Vertex VMS to be used both as a measuring system and as a precise marking‑out tool when required.
Are probes interchangeable across Series 9, Series 10 and VMS 250S models?
Do probes require separate calibration?
In practice, the height gauge is calibrated as a complete system with the probe installed, verifying perpendicularity, probing performance and dimensional accuracy. As long as probes are in good condition and correctly qualified within the software, separate probe calibration is not normally required beyond the digital height gauge system’s regular UKAS servicing and calibration cycle.
