Behind the Scenes: VMS Testing & QA

VMS Testing News

As a UKAS Accredited Laboratory, Eley Metrology ensures their products are of the highest quality and pride themselves on the longevity of all of their products, particularly their Digital Height Gauges.

This unrivalled product specification for the Vertical Measuring System (VMS) is achieved through the rigorous testing procedures that the precision engineers have implemented.

These procedures are mandatory on all VMS digital height gauges and make sure that customers are receiving a gauge that they can trust. Some of our original MKI Vertex Height Gauges are still out in the field performing just as they were when they were sent out and this is a testament to the quality of our products.

Extensive Testing

Below are only a few of the tests that our engineers put the VMS through to ensure it is working to the best of its capability, before, during and after assembly:

Geometrical Testing is performed by checking the spindle with a clock to ensure flatness, parallelism and perpendicularity.

Pre-Sub-Assembly Testing checks the in-house manufactured parts against the initial CAD drawings to ensure the tolerances and dimensions are correct.

Water Tests the air bearings employed in the VMS are submerged in water with an active airflow to ensure there is no extra leakage.

The Pneumatics Pressure Test another air based procedure to test the handle for leakage and air pressure to each required assembly using pressure gauges and flow gauges.

The Clutch Test is to check the setting distance between the conical clutch to ensure the eddy currents are being generated to the correct voltage to enable traversing.

The Functionality Test is performed as a full battery test where the carriage is traversing up and down from a full charge with all components running.

These are only a handful of the tests we put only one of our machines through, so you can imagine how rigorously we check all of our machines.
